I left a more detailed review on the companion piece to this print (the “USA” version purchased at the same time) so I’ll skip the preamble here and just get to it. This print is actually the one I saw first. Before I even knew about the other and I was immediately drawn to it. Now in looking at them side by side, it’s almost hard to imagine them not as a pair. While the contrast and juxtaposition is stark and provocative, as a set they complement each other perfectly. The “propaganda” inspired themes pulled through in this version are as haunting as they are breathtaking and stunning. The way Rocky is portrayed evokes feelings of weakness and inferiority in a startling and uncomfortable way. Thankfully balance is achieved in its uplifting and inspirational counterpart that is full of such hope and triumph, one look at it makes you want to sprint up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as Gonna Fly Now echoes in your mind. John’s work is unquestionably my favorite of any Rocky artist whose work I’ve been proud to own and yes I own several (including the iconic portrait seen in Rocky III by one of America’s most legendary artists). John’s work stands above them all. 🥊
